Georgetown County Surf Fishing Ordinance

Since learning of the proposed Georgetown County surf fishing ordinance this past Tuesday
evening, CCA South Carolina has worked with our local chapter leadership and volunteers,
other members of the recreational fishing community, and local Georgetown County decision
makers.
Recreational saltwater surf fishing is an accessible outdoor activity and is a revered past-time
that connects individuals and families to the natural environment, promotes conservation
awareness, and contributes to Georgetown’s local economy. It provides an affordable and
inclusive opportunity for people of all ages, backgrounds, and income levels to enjoy coastal
resources in a sustainable and respectful way. CCA South Carolina believes that public access
to beaches and coastal waters for surf fishing must be preserved and safeguarded
Restrictions that limit reasonable access threaten not only the rights of recreational anglers, but
also the broader public interest in equitable use of natural resources. Responsible surf fishing
can and does coexist with tourism, environmental protection, and other beach uses when
managed thoughtfully and collaboratively. Preserving open access to recreational surf fishing is
not just about fishing — it’s about ensuring everyone has the opportunity to enjoy our shared
coastal traditions and uphold the public’s right to engage with our envious marine resources; a
sentiment we are confident is shared by many.
We appreciate and value Georgetown County Council’s time and talents as this ordinance
moves through the remainder of their process.
